Annualised hours at Northallerton NHS trust

Article Abstract:

The Northallerton Health Services NHS Trust has adopted annualised hours and made other changes to working time to increase flexibility and to better meet patients' care requirements. The earlier arrangement of preparing monthly rosters was ineffective because managers could not predict work loads and frequently had to use bank staff. The new arrangement, included in the contracts of newly recruited nurses, requires them to work 1,670 hours a year, excluding allowances for holidays and training. This system is cost effective and makes better use of the regular staff.

Long hours worked by fathers "detrimental" to family life

Article Abstract:

A 1996 report of 6,000 UK parents indicates 25% of fathers work 50 or more hours weekly, often on evening or weekend shifts, creating a situation detrimental to quality family life. Heavy work schedules prevent fathers from contributing properly to family responsibilities and creates additional stress for working mothers. This problem of the flexible labor market, which emphasizing on longer hours and part-time work, should be addressed by employment policies more conducive to family life.

Flexible working hours - a survey of practice

Article Abstract:

A 1996 survey of 34 UK employers indicates many have adopted annual hours arrangements as an alternative to traditional flexitime. Employers are adapting annualized hours concepts to non-seasonal short-term situations. Annualized hours schemes increase productivity and flexibility, but can create scheduling problems for both employers and employees. Other flexible hours arrangements include staggered hours, teleworking, and hours banking.
