Article Abstract:

There is growing concern about lead in the environment, despite new UK and European Union laws to safeguard the community from the hazards associated with lead paint. Lead, which has been used for some 6,000 years and can cause death or severe poisoning, has previously been associated with industrial exposure, but increasingly, evidence shows that lead pigments in paint can harm some children. It has been suggested that the removal of lead paint from homes should be undertaken professionally and not carried out by domestic decorators.

What is a 'risk assessment' anyway?

Article Abstract:

The Health and Safety at Work Act of 1974 was passed to ensure that workplaces were as safe as was reasonable. Employers are responsible for making sure that their employees are not working in dangerous conditions. The 'risk assessment' involves evaluating hazards and deciding whether they are acceptable or a serious risk to life and limb. This can be done by a variety of means including surveys and looking at risk scenarios.
