Government accused of 'sabotaging' new European Community pollution directive

Article Abstract:

The UK government is fighting against a European Community directive aimed at exposing polluters. The Campaign for Freedom of Information says the directive, intended to be incorporated into UK law by the end of 1992, has been sabotaged, politicians proposing extensive exemptions to give easy excuses for the suppression of embarrassing facts. The directive calls for members of the public to have access to environmental pollution data held by the government and public authorities subject to it not infringing the requirements of national security or commercial secrecy. The government argues that if it releases such information that is provided voluntarily, in future firms would not supply it.
