HR as a source of shareholder value: research and recommendations

Article Abstract:

It is argued that the human resource (HR) management function has the potential to serve as a strategic organizational asset that can create value for shareholders. This potential can be realized by abandoning the traditional concept of HR and viewing it as 'human capital management.' This new perspective considers human resources and the HR system as more than overhead that has to be minimized. It entails changes in the role of the HR function and the chief human resources officer. The transformed HR department focuses on outcomes at the business level and not just at the HR level, serves as a strategic core competency instead of just a market follower, emphasizes strategic competencies rather than functional competencies, and adopts a systems perspective.
