ITS - a long way to go

Article Abstract:

An intelligent tutoring system (ITS) replaced Plato, the computer-based training (CBT) system that Control Data Corp recently sold. CBTs are understood by personnel managers and time proven, but ITSs are not well established or well applied by personnel managers. They do not know enough about the systems to make informed decisions about their suitability and how to apply ITSs. Sales demonstrations by competent, knowledgeable ITS users can help overcome this. ITSs allow users higher productivity and highly effective learning materials, and it is apparent after use of ITSs that they are more capable of adapting to individual strengths and needs than a CBT, though CBTs emphasize presentation and graphics more.

A praiseworthy application of interactive video

Article Abstract:

The interactive video package on statistical process control (SPC) developed by FutureMedia and the education and training department of the Ford Motor Co can very well become a training classic of the 1980's. The package includes five discs, beginning with an introduction, continuing through data collection to implementation. The courseware runs on an Alcorn Master with tracker ball and costs 4,000 pounds sterling of the total package cost of 9,500 pounds sterling. The dedicated work station is an incentive for buyers to train more staff. The future assimilation of the SPC into the infrastructure of the Ford Motor Co and its suppliers will be interesting to watch.

A new perspective on business games

Article Abstract:

A range of business simulation packages developed by Reality Technologies and published in the UK by Viking Enterprises contain good tutoring systems. The six computer-based packages are based on actual case studies and not the fictional companies used by most business games. Ample text and illustrations provide much background material. Aids for a learner to obtain basic familiarity with the material are a tutorial about new concepts and a consulting system about key issues. The North American culture and context of the packages may limit their total applicability in UK and Europe.
