Ian Thornley: personnel director, Shell UK

Article Abstract:

Ian Thornley, personnel director of Shell UK, is profiled. Thornley has spent his entire career at Shell, beginning as a research chemist and moving into plant management in 1969. Between 1983 and 1986, Thornley was manager of Shell's plant in Carrington, which at the time was losing money and faced the prospect of either laying off employees or closing down. Thornley's management team succeeded in making the plant more efficient, creating single status for all employees and one union agreement for all of the plant's technicians. He also worked with the plant's union to develop a successful out-placement program which succeeded in finding jobs for 85 percent of the plant's redundant workers. Thornley's experience in employee relations at the Carrington plant led to his appointment as personnel director for Shell International.

Marion Stockley, director of personnel for the London Residuary Body, has been involved in local government throughout her career, beginning as a clerical worker for the London County Council and serving as director of employee relations for the Greater London Council. The London Residuary Body was created to manage the pension fund of the Greater London Council upon its dissolution, as well as the sale of County Hall and its inherited property, and to place Council staff unable to find new employment on their own. Stockley's approach to her position with the London Residuary Body, which has five years to complete its work, and the path she took to reach the upper levels of government personnel management are described.
