Increasing the minimum wage makes good social and economic policy

Article Abstract:

The benefits of raising the US minimum wage include: (1) improving the living standards of working people, (2) strengthening the economy by providing more money for minimum wage earners to spend on basics, (3) providing more of an incentive to end welfare dependency. Claims that a higher minimum wage would increase youth unemployment and reduce the number of entry-level jobs are unfounded. The business climate, the trade deficit, interest rates, seasonal variations in the economy, and the increased presence of women in the work force have a greater effect on job creation and unemployment than periodic increases in the minimum wage.
