Management in a cross-cultural environment: the best of both worlds

Article Abstract:

Multinational corporations and U.S.-based foreign operating companies realize the importance of including cross-cultural influences in their management styles. For example, Fujitsu America, Inc., a U.S. subsidiary of a Japanese corporation has combined Japanese and American management styles, such that both individuality and consensus-building are emphasized by its management team. The individualism and directness of American management theories are tempered by the open communications and agreement stressed by the Japanese within the corporation. Both styles have their advantages in given situations. The combination of cultural styles at Fujitsu America has led to the development of managers who are patient, can adapt well to others and to organizational changes, and appreciate the perspectives of others.

The new economic environment

Article Abstract:

The phenomenal economic growth being experienced by east Germany can be attributed to the influx of foreign investments in the country after the fall of the Soviet Union. East German workers now earn competitive salaries that allow them to improve their living conditions. This economic boom has also led to the creation of company-sponsored pension schemes. Three models for evaluating the different factors that affect the effectiveness of such schemes are presented.
