Mandatory retirement and the dignity canard

Article Abstract:

Arbitrary policy on retirement age forces all employees out of their jobs; it is inconsistent with eliminating age discrimination. The experience in other countries is that employees will retire when they can afford to. If mandatory retirement is abolished by the government, voluntary retirement will gain importance.

Upper age limit of 65 lawful

Article Abstract:

The judgment passed in the case of Secretary of State for Trade and Industry v Rutherford and others, upholding the statutory upper age limit of 65 is described. The disparate impact of the decision on the whole labor force is discussed.

Retirement age: Hewitt's shameful surrender

Article Abstract:

Secretary of State Patricia Hewitt played an active role in the feminist movement of the 1970s and was expected to promote equal opportunities. However by implementing the mandatory retirement, she has compromised on her earlier stand.
