Medical care

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong's health care delivery system is credited for being one of the main factors accounting for the colony's healthy and long-lived citizens. The government introduced semi-private rooms in 1994 as part of a strategy to contain medical costs. Those who want to have better rooms try to control costs by buying private medical insurance. Health maintenance organizations are also becoming popular. The main problem of private medical insurers is the great disparities in the fees charged by doctors, who often bill on the basis of patients' ability to pay. Spiralling medical costs are forecasted to continue being a major problem for the colony's health care delivery system.

Medical care

Article Abstract:

The Singaporean health care system currently faces the rising costs of medical services. The government is implementing cost-containment measures even when the private sector seems unconcerned to take some responsibility for the use of medical benefits. Such cost management measures include flexible benefits, a managed health care system and a utilization review. Employer compliance to these measures are steadily increasing. The general direction points to managed health care programs and reforms to help alleviate the rising cost of medical care.

Medical care

Article Abstract:

A revision of the 85-year-old Swiss medical insurance infrastructure will take effect on Jan. 1, 1996 after Swiss residents voted for the amendments in Dec. 1994. Aimed at gaining solidarity between all citizens, the new law shall treat all citizens equally regardless of sex, age, physical condition and financial status. The new structure covers both the basic coverage and complementary coverage, resulting in well-defined benefits and premiums. As a preventive measure against anti-selection, compulsory membership for all citizens is required.
