Money can't buy you information

Article Abstract:

Important details have been left out of the 1997/8 UK Health & Safety Commission's report, according to experts in the industry. Statistics relating to incident investigations were omitted, which fails to indicate any specific action taken by firms after conviction. The Health and Safety Executive claim information was left out of the report because of limited space. No information is given as to legal action taken against firms for the 261 deaths which occurred in UK workplaces during the period from 1997 to 1998.

Crime and punishment

Article Abstract:

Companies convicted under the Health and Safety Act can only be fined. Unlike cases concerning individuals, the court is not informed of the financial status of the company or whether it has previous convictions for this type of offence. The average fine in 1990-91 was 881 pounds sterling. In the US companies can be forced to make changes in their operations by the judge.
