Article Abstract:

The Employment Law and Practice Conference was held on 14 July 1999 and the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, Stephen Byers, told delegates that legislation had to be balanced so that employees' rights were protected but also so that businesses could remain competitive. The conference discussed parental leave, maternity rights, unfair dismissal, discrimination cases and the working time directive.

AbilityNet is a charitable resource for disabled people and employers of disabled people who need special equipment to use a computer. AbilityNet also provides seminars on work-related disabilities like repetitive strain injuries and provides equipment needed to help people keep working.

By 2002, call centers are expecting to be employing 2% of the United Kingdom workforce. Health issues of call centers include working simultaneously with telephones and computers, shift work, and electronic performance monitoring.
