NFTC/ASA global HR conference: San Jose

Article Abstract:

The National Foreign Trade Council and the Actuarial Sciences Assocs sponsored a two-day conference in San Jose, CA, entitled 'Building a Successful Global Human Resources Function.' Former Merck & Co. Sr SVP of Human Resources Deborah Smith discussed the ways by which HR officials can provide leadership for the businesses they support. David Hodgkinson, HR head at Hong Kong-based HSBC Asia-Pacific, extolled Asia's human resource for the Asian economic miracle, the recent economic turmoil notwithstanding.

Hay International Conference: Barcelona

Article Abstract:

Speakers at the plenary session held during Hay's 1998 international conference discussed the proper application and management of human capital to ensure the competitive advantage of organizations. Harvard Prof Christopher Bartlett focused on what he calls 'the individualized corporation' and argued that flexible empowerment is the key to mobilizing human capital. Meanwhile, Dr Gary Hamel discussed how companies can become 'authors' of the current industrial revolution.
