Organizing rights at the 'Global University'

Article Abstract:

A study to explore the global dimension of the fight for organizing rights among graduate teachers and researchers in private universities, focusing on the fight at Yale was conducted. The study with a key element of research was the documentation of the emerging national movement for the rights of international academic workers through a graduate teacher union organizing at the Yale University provides historical examinations of the Chinese students in the graduate students union at the Yale and the factors leading to the emergence of a broader consciousness of labor rights in the academy.

Several efforts were made to address the exploitation of part-time/adjunct faculty in American institutions of higher education. The broader issues that were raised by Washington Federation of Teachers (WFT) for future efforts on behalf of part-time/adjunct faculty were examined.

Organizing contingent academics: the legal and practical barriers
