Pitfalls on the road to measurement: the dangerous liaison of human resources with the ideas of accounting and finance

Article Abstract:

The HR function is compelled by the pressures of the business environment to adopt measurement systems proving its effectiveness, efficiency and value. However, most of the measures employed by HR professionals are riddled with problems. Measurement systems tend to focus only on measurable variables, be affected by the time horizon of measures, lose sight of the systems focus, and measure elements that cannot be influenced by HR. The weaknesses of these measures, which are mostly finance-based, should compel a rethinking of the role of HR in the organization. It should embrace an alternative role that involves the maintenance of the organizational culture and values in times of short-term pressures, implementation of people-oriented values, and communication to senior management of research indicating that effective people management provides a competitive advantage.
