Post-privatisation personnel policies lack strategic direction

Article Abstract:

A Towers Perrin report entitled 'Improving Performance Through People: Survey Report on HR Issues in the Utility Industries' indicates that many chief executives and human resources executives feel the need for more focused personnel policies. There is the belief that the present policies do not boost companies' competitiveness. Eleven of the 14 companies surveyed felt the need for more integrated policies. Twelve of the companies believe that personnel policies should create an environment that aids the achievement of business goals.

Preparing managers for change

Article Abstract:

A survey of 45 Scottish organizations with a total of 100,000 employees found extensive recent changes in human-resources functions but little success in improving overall performance. The study, run by the University of Strathclyde's Dept of Human Resources, found that supervisors and managers need to develop more person-management skills, and that many HR depts are becoming more like internal consultancies while losing staff. Quality initiatives were found at the center of most competitive strategies.

Developing policies and procedures

Article Abstract:

British employers are developing clear procedures and policies to handle sexual harassment in the workplace, as shown by a survey of 65 private and public sector organizations. Of the 65 firms, 46 have explicit policies, and 29 of those 46 have a formal complaint procedure. Features covered include policy statement content, complaint channels, the line of authority, written records, time limits and counseling. The reasons why policies were adopted are listed for each of the 46 organizations.
