Probation officers balance danger

Article Abstract:

Chief Probation Officers have to ensure the health and safety of their staff, and often have a team of advisers to train and update staff on health and safety issues. Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Probation issues recommendations which must be acted upon, and failure to do so results in penalties. Designing a policy on violence at work was one recommendation, however, staff are finding it difficult to put policies into practice due to financial constraints. Making the probation service more user-friendly by removing screens and having open-plan areas also exposes staff to risks.

Healthy buildings healthy minds

Article Abstract:

Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) is estimated to cost the UK between 330 to 650 million pounds sterling per year, according to a 1991 House of Commons Environment Report. Although employers are often happy to spend 5,000-10,000 pounds on an investigative report into SBS, they are more reluctant to invest in correction work which can cost anything up from 1 million pounds. An overview of recent developments in SBS detection, management, and contributory factors is included.
