Reshaping today's organizations for tomorrow's needs

Article Abstract:

Transformational leadership encourages employees to achieve job ownership, which makes them more productive because they feel they have a greater stake in the company. Job ownership is promoted by challenging employee limitations, establishing clear operational goals, presenting employees with a corporate vision, and defining the organization's purpose. Transformational leadership theories have been employed at several major U.S. corporations, and ten steps followed by Honeywell's personnel department to implement transformational leadership are discussed. To facilitate change within an organization, managers are reminded to: be sure the change planned is desirable, take time to implement changes, organize a team to make the changes, and promote a consensus favoring change.

The vital few and the trivial many

Article Abstract:

Vilfredo Pareto's 'Law of the vital few and the trivial many' can be applied to areas such as bank deposit ownership, medical need, highway accidents, tardiness, absenteeism, managerial competence, and financial performance. Pareto's Law is based on the notion that only a small proportion of any group of people, events, objects, ideas, or issues are significant. Efforts to achieve results should focus on these few significant elements. Managers can increase productivity by understanding and utilizing the principle behind Pareto's Law: the majority of one's tasks are insignificant.

Work force 2000

Article Abstract:

Research such as the Department of Labor's report "Workforce 2000" reveals employment trends in 1989 that are likely to continue to the turn of the century. Companies gearing up for 2000 will need to understand that the work force growth will be reduced dramatically; pay and fringe benefit policies will have to be redeveloped to take into account the increased number of women in the work force; and technology will continue to automate tasks and change how business is conducted.
