Safety screening and ethics: the role of employment screening in health and safety is subject controversy

Article Abstract:

A new model for controlling risks in an organisation allows for the screning into employment of employees who match the job. Ethical issues surrounding the use of screening emphasise control and key issues are whether screeing is used to reduce risks of ill health or injury, or to minimise an employer's liability. Pre-employment screeing could help to identify individuals susceptible to respiratory hazards, and genetic screening can be used to exclude those who may be at risk from non-occupational diseases.

Lifting the burden

Article Abstract:

Regulations coming into force in 1992 were designed to assist companies and employees who have heavy objects which have to be handled. Employees required to undertake heavy lifting should be given information on the load such as its weight and the heaviest part of it if applicable. Some observers feel that consultation with employees should not be the sole criteria, as they may be prepared to lift heavier loads than they should.

Child labour

Article Abstract:

Many UK companies now employ school pupils instead of adult workers in order to cut costs, and 71% of school children are now in paid part-time work. There are strict guidelines about employing children, especially in areas considered to present particularly high risks, such as agriculture. Particular problems can arise when a child is being employed through a family connection or when insufficient training has been given.
