Shaping the future of work

Article Abstract:

Most research into the future of work has failed to take into account the fact that small and family-run business, and work within and for families, play a key role in working patterns in developing countries. Extending research to embrace these elements means that issues as participative management, new technology and lean production become much less relevant. One of the main issues in shaping the future of work will be work-time. Some companies are already making moves to reduce individual work-time and to implement work-sharing agreements.

Industrial relations: looking to the future

Article Abstract:

Labour market reforms have sought to remove the institutions of wage protection and improve the power of employers since 1979. However there are contradictions in the evolution of state and employer policies and there is an argument mapping out a new social democratic settlement that could remove the social destructiveness of neoliberalism. There is a question has to how government will deal with employer resistance and how the government pursues full employment as a policy objective.

Research note: injunctions as a legal weapon in industrial disputes

Article Abstract:

Employment laws have led to the application for and granting of injunctions in industrial disputes, according to a survey of trade unions in Britain. Strike action since the 1980 Employment Act and the laws of the 1980s and 1990s are examined. Patterns of legal action were also analysed and the survey found that most of the applications for injunctions were successful. It also showed that using the law to prevent or end industrial action is still the exception.
