Sick building remedy

Article Abstract:

Sick building syndrome has been recognized by the World Health Organization and is linked to poor air quality and can lead to lower productivity at work. The construction industry should ensure than it uses materials that do not damage occupants of buildings they construct, or the environment. There is a need to review health and safety standards, especially when there may be several pollutants which have a cumulative effect, though levels are within agreed limits for individual pollutants. There is a need for dialogue between different professionals involved in buildings such as engineers, architects and building health specialists.

There are a number of problems related to working environments that can lead to health troubles. Indoor pollution can come from a range of sources, and sealed buildings may be affected by chemical pollutants as well as spores and mycotoxins. Building design is important, and non-toxic building materials should be used. The needs of end users should also be paramount when buildings are designed. The state of health of the workforce should be assessed when studying buildings, and questionnaires can be used for this purpose.
