Social policy state of play

Article Abstract:

The directives adopted by the European Commission in the last six months of 2004 are discussed. The Commission adopted the proposals prohibiting discriminations based on sex in access to and the supply of goods and services. An agreement on stress at work was also entered into between the European Trade Union Confederation, private sector employers represented by UNICE and public sectors employers represented by CEEP. Other issues dealt by the Commission included working time directive, equal treatment between men and women in employment and occupation, temporary work proposals, and consultation on work-related musculo-skeletal disorders.

New accord at Siemens secures jobs and increases

Article Abstract:

The salient aspects of a new collective agreement between the Germany's metalworking trade union IG Metall and the electronics group Siemens are highlighted. The agreement ensures job security till 2009 for the workers with corresponding increases in annual working time. Elsewhere, the workers in Germany's regional states protested against the working time policy implemented on the new recruits by the regional state employers.

Collective agreements in place in temporary work sector

Article Abstract:

Legislative frameworks and the collective bargaining accords in the private temporary employment sector in Germany are discussed. Accord between German trade union confederation DGB and employer's organization BZA that sets out a minimum pay frameworks and working time of 35 hours is discussed.
