Steps to using investment consultants

Article Abstract:

Plan sponsors and investment consultants can develop either a task-specific relationship or a general relationship, depending on the sponsors' needs. Investment consultants help establish written investment policies, educate plan sponsors, design asset-allocationg policies and evaluate investment managers. Plan sponsors choosing which investment consultants to hire should consider the experience and resources of each consultant, the effectiveness of each consultant's relationship with former or current clients and the level of independence of each consultant.

Who's accountable?

Article Abstract:

Investment consultants are playing an increasingly important role in pension fund management. In the past, such consultants merely helped pension fund administrators identify good money managers. In the 1980s, however, they began providing asset and liability modeling services, as well as progressing to an advisory capacity in the 1990s. In their expanded capacities, consultants take on fiduciary responsibilities that they may need to be accountable, and get reasonably compensated, for.

Recordkeeping: how to get it right

Article Abstract:

Companies should avoid errors in keeping records for their pension plans since these may lead to failure in complying with IRS codes. They may have to hire external recordkeepers who will ensure that all pertinent data and procedures are recorded and are readily available. Recordkeepers should also be hired who can provide schedules and workflows and whose operations are audited by an independent accounting firm.
