The changing role of the Trades Union Congress

Article Abstract:

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has traditionally been concerned with health and safety. It now has fewer members and faces competition from European unions and larger groupings of UK unions. In 1989 78 unions were part of the TUC and they had over eight million members. By early 1992 this had fallen to 72 member unions and just over seven million members. More than half of this membership belong to five large unions. There is concern that due to lack of funds the TUC will no longer be able to give health and safety training to members outside the big five unions.

What do accidents cost?

Article Abstract:

Accidents at work involve high costs to employees and to the companies involved, and this includes both extra spending and lost income. Costs to UK employees are estimated at 1 billion pounds sterling, with a further 4.3 billion pounds cost in terms of suffering of employees and their families. Employees receive an estimated 650 million compensation so bear the cost of some 5 billion pounds. Employers' costs cannot always be recovered from insurers and thus profitability is affected.
