Trends in plan design

Article Abstract:

Some of the leading plan consulting firms discuss their views on the trends for 1995. There will be a conversion from defined benefit (DB) plans to defined contribution (DC) plans. DC plans are thought by many plan sponsors to be less costly and more responsive to the employees' needs. Many employers will also be converting their DB plans to cash balance plans because they provide the best features of both DB and DC plans. Cost, value, complexity and risk are the priorities of plan sponsors. One major challenge in managing DB plans would be understanding the Retirement Protection Act.

When in-house administration makes sense

Article Abstract:

Some companies decide to keep their benefits administration work in-house after assessing the costs and benefits of outsourcing. One of these firms is Fleet Financial Group Inc. After studying if outsourcing is the best for the company, it found that simply consolidating all benefits administration is the better option for its employees. Only minor work is done outside, such as billing for retiree COBRA payments.
