US international social security agreements

Article Abstract:

The advantages of social security agreements between the US and foreign countries, negotiated by the US Social Security Administration (SSA), are discussed. There is a lack of awareness amongst employers about these agreements and their financial benefits. Such agreements offer benefits to the working population, by ensuring they do not pay social security contributions in both another country and the US, and to the retired population, by ensuring they receive benefits. US firms which operate overseas and foreign firms which operate in the US can also find their taxation lightened and their profits and competitive edge improved as a result of the social security agreements.
