WTO accession: China can wait

Article Abstract:

An agreement to admit China to the World Trade Organization (WTO) would have to include enforceable labor rights for Chinese workers, with involvement of the Intnl. Labor Organization in certification, and commercial benefits. If China were to be allowed into the WTO, data indicate that the US trade deficit with that country would double very quickly. Imports from China to the US would be much more important than goods moving the other direction. Foreign direct investment into China would dramatically expand the export-oriented production facilities, taking advantage of a large supply of low-wage semi-skilled labor, an effect that could be seen in Mexico with NAFTA.

The furthest south

Article Abstract:

The UK Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1914-1917 may have failed to achieve its objective of crossing the Antarctic from one side to the other via the South Pole, but it gave one of the most dramatic and remarkable adventures in expedition. A series of photographs taken by meteorologist Leonard Hussey, the youngest member of the expedition, is presented. These photographs detail the fate that met the Endurance, one of the two ships that were used in the expedition.
