What price a company chairman?

Article Abstract:

The press furor over the pay increases of Britain's top executives is largely unwarranted. The uproar over the 43% increase in the compensation of British Telecom (BT) chairman Iain Valliance is a case in point. BT's pay policy is based on the principle that executives should be paid at levels similar to their counterparts in industry. Valliance's salary is actually below that of other chairmen of major industrial groups, notwithstanding the fact that BT is Britain's largest company. His much-publicized performance bonus, assessed by an experienced non-executive board, is in fact a recognition of his skillful leadership in guiding BT through a year of crucial importance.
