A new twist in the variable annuity market

Article Abstract:

An increasing number of insurance companies are offering variable annuities as the public's negative perception of annuitization appears to diminish. Two trends point to the growing interest in variable annuities. One is the impending retirement of the oldest baby boomers who worry about depleting their retirement incomes and seeing their purchasing power decline. Another is the popularity of defined-contribution pension programs and the consequent allocation of numerous assets in individual retirement accounts, salary reduction savings plans and other qualified plans.

Variable survivorship life: bull market enhances appeal of policies

Article Abstract:

The bullish stock market should help increase the popularity of variable survivorship life insurance policies, because of the high returns posted by many mutual funds during Jan-Jun 1995. These policies pay guaranteed death benefits upon the death of the second spouse, but mutual fund growth can enhance the value of the death benefit. These policies are well-suited for multimillion-dollar family estates, especially estates with businesses.

The impact of the recession

Article Abstract:

The recession has contributed to declining sales of life insurance policies in the 4th qtr of 1990 and first two quarters of 1991. Prospects for future sales depend on economic conditions, which improved somewhat in the summer of 1991 and then worsened again. Aug 1991 figures show that term was the only type of insurance with increased sales in the period. Term products should continue to prove profitable.
