Benchmarking insurers' investments: study advances effort to grade insurers' investment strategies

Article Abstract:

A.M. Best Co conducted an investment benchmarking research project to determine the efficacy of the investment strategies of insurance companies. Of specific concern are the benefits that insurers derive from their investment risks and whether the goal of their strategies is mainly to avoid mistakes. Some of the strategies utilized by A.M. Best include the establishment of liability-based peer groups from a comprehensive database covering all product lines and the development of an asset database that includes all unique securities in the country's life insurance industry.

Using long-term care to ensure customer loyalty

Article Abstract:

A survey of the 10 largest health maintenance organizations (HMO) indicated that they will eventually start providing long-term care (LTC) coverage to their members. Their main reason for providing LTC is to develop customer loyalty. HMOs also perceive LTC as a means to expand product lines and to incent positive customer behavior in the increasingly competitive market. Humana Inc. may be the first HMO to offer an LTC policy.

A.M. Best rates HMOs: tracking a fast-growing market

Article Abstract:

A.M. Best, cognizant of the rapidly growing importance of health maintenance organizations (HMO) as health insurance providers, has begun rating them. Explanations of why Best rates HMOs and of the factors used in calculating the ratings are presented. Best's ratings, based on both qualitative and quantitative factors, are intended to reflect each rated HMO's overall financial strength.
