Careful strategy is necessary for international expansion. Normal problems which face international business are outlined. Problems which specifically affect international insurance are analyzed. World economic conditions accentuate the problems. Observation of long term trends is stressed. The establishment of basic goals is important. The international strategy and planning of Kemper International Insurance Company is presented.

Planners need to establish a network of contacts, gather information from potential clients and use resources from such agencies as the Small Business Administration and the Department of Commerce. Planners should know that helping a business expand internationally requires commitment from the leadership, time to complete the project and adequate funding.

Strategic fiscal methods protect clients' assets

There are several methods that a financial planner can use to protect clients' assets in the event they are sued. Asset protection planning, which involves transferring asset ownership from a client's name, is often done as part of the estate planning process. Ways to protect assets include using revocable living trusts, irrevocable trusts, qualified personal residence trusts and family limited partnerships.
