Calling out before the flood

Article Abstract:

Financially troubled insurance companies often make matters worse by thwarting early attempts at remediation by state regulators. The consequences of two possible plans of action, denial and early government intervention, are illustrated by the fictitious case of Compound Holding Co. Various insolvency cases illustrate that government intervention in the insurance industry is highly effective since this strategy has the sanction of state and federal laws, which consider the industry to be closely associated with the public trust.

A capital question

Article Abstract:

Mutual insurance companies are facing a host of challenges in deciding whether to change their structure to attract more capital. Mutual insurers are under tremendous pressure from the financial community to reduce expenses, boost market share and increase customer and product focus to become more competitive. However, these companies find that there are certain advantages and disadvantages in demutualization, converting to a mutual holding company or retaining their present structure.

Insurers are now being pressured to raise additional capital to meet new regulatory standards. Preparation is the key to success in raising capital. Management must first decide whether to seek strategic alliances with another company or to go public. The next steps are to develop a portfolio strategy and a business plan; then test the market forecast to prepare for investors' questions. Finally, find investors.
