One for the books

Article Abstract:

Soft market conditions stimulated a spate of consolidation activities in the life and health insurance industry in 1996. Life and health insurance companies actively sought growth in surplus and premium volume while instituting expense reduction and management strategies. The main strategy of choice among insurers was consolidation. Numerous life and health insurance companies opted to acquire or merge with competitors and affiliates to avoid high start-up costs associated with entering a new business or region.

The new value proposition

Article Abstract:

Insurance companies that offer life and health coverage are facing unprecedented competition from large foreign insurers and domestic financial-service firms. To stay profitable, US insurers must gather as much information as possible about customers and design and sell useful policies. Insurers also should pursue long-term relationships with customers, improve their distribution channels and maintain profit margins. Companies may need to consider acquisitions or mergers to remain viable.
