Confessions of an insurance observer

Article Abstract:

Former Gannett Co. Chmn. Allen H. Neuharth noted that the insurance industry has not really made any effort to sell its positive values and benefits to the consumer through aggressive advertising programs. He pointed out that recent media attention on insurance concerned the fraudulent activities of some insurers against their policyholders. Neuharth believes that if the industry wants more media attention on their positive side, it should actively make efforts to focus that attention to itself.

Insurance agents can leverage information technology to respond to customer demands. Call centers, toll-free numbers and Internet communications can be used to process insurance applications; but such technology will require a simplified sales approach.

Agents should be aware of emerging liability

Article Abstract:

Insurance agents are increasingly being sued either as a direct action from an injured party or as part of a third-party beneficiary suit. Agents need to be aware of the circumstances in which a plaintiff must pursue a direct action as well as the opportunities in which a plaintiff might pursue an action even though not mandatory.
