Author Michael Dertouzos' newest book 'What Will Be' predicts an information-intensive and fast-paced tomorrow driven by technological change and a broader access to data and communications. The author believes that companies such as insurance firms can familiarize themselves with the Internet without having to spend too much money. He predicts that many firms including insurers will offer customized products that will be readily available and more easily understood through an online network.

Reinsurance broker's role expands to risk manager

Article Abstract:

Reinsurance brokers used to provide reinsurance for companies that needed it and received commissions for their services. In 1996, reinsurance brokers provide special services for fees rather than a commission. These brokers assist primary insurance companies in their selection of reinsurance and their selection of a reinsurance provider. Reinsurance brokers will also create catastrophe reinsurance alternatives.

Managing risk is key to brokers' survival

Insurance brokers need to recognize the importance of risk management to the future of their industry. Brokers are losing ground to competitors who have recognized the need to offer their clients comprehensive risk management strategies and consulting. Many of these competitors offer everything an insurer does, and more, making the future bleak for insurance brokers who do not recognize this trend.
