The Nature and Characteristics of Insurance Agent Fraud

Article Abstract:

Despite prospects of both criminal and civil liability, agent fraud continues to be a serious problem. Fraud is committed against both insurers and consumers. This article addresses the nature and characteristics of fraudulent activities of agents. The characteristics of perpetrators, schemes employed, and types of detection and investigation techniques utilized are examined, using the results of a survey of the 8,000 member Association of Certified Fraud Examiners.

The Insurance Firm Internal Auditor as Fraud-Buster

Article Abstract:

Internal fraud is a significant problem faced by property and casualty insurance companies. Asset misappropriation committed by employees accounts for more than four out of five offenses. The insurance company internal auditor is often in the best position to detect, prevent, and deter employee fraud. This article outlines the types of fraud that occur in the property and casualty insurance industry, the fraud risks and signals that insurance firm internal auditors should recognize, the assistance that insurance internal auditors can provide for independent auditors, and the positive steps insurance internal auditors can take to prevent, deter, detect, and report fraud.

The effects of the North American Free Trade Agreement on automobile insurance

Article Abstract:

The North American Free Trade Agreement will lift all barriers to insurance business between Mexico and the US by 2000. This means that US and Canadian insurance firms can own 100% of the business of Mexican insurance companies and vice versa. Changes will be gradually introduced by setting the maximum ownership at 30% in 1994 before increasing to 51% in 1998. A seamless car insurance policy between the US and Mexico has also been established.
