Two's a crowd

Article Abstract:

The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) is stepping up efforts to fight insurance fraud with its ClaimSmart database system that detects, prevents and prosecutes questionable claims. ClaimSmart has received over two million claims since it was launched in May 1995 and averages about 200,000 inquiries monthly. The American Insurance Services Group (AISG), however, has a larger, all-claims database which threatens ClaimSmart. New York-based AISG receives an estimated 100,000 claims a day and collects data from over 1,600 companies.

Agents' favorite software

Article Abstract:

A survey of insurance agencies shows that 95% of agencies are automated and of those agencies 90% are using IBM-compatible equipment. Spending on hardware and software ranges from a few thousand dollars to several million dollars, depending on the size of the agency. Most insurance agencies have basic off-the-shelf applications, like Microsoft's Office Suite, and comparative rating software. Rating systems and agency management systems can be found in medium sized agencies, and specialized software can be found in large operations.

Off-the-shelf software makes industry inroads

Article Abstract:

Insurers are increasingly abandoning legacy computer systems and buying off-the-shelf software. There are about 15 major producers of insurance automation software. The number of major insurers using legacy systems has fallen from about 95%, in 1987, to about 80% in 1997. For the industry as a whole, about 50% of companies use legacy systems. Age and design are legacy systems' biggest problems.
