Where cyberspace and the world of insurance converge

Article Abstract:

Electronic commerce is forecasted to have a major and widespread effect on the operation and structure of the insurance and financial services industries. The technology has changed the way firms use computer networks for marketing and transacting businesses. Some have restructured the packaging of their insurance services and adopted innovative distribution strategies to promote their services. Business-related activities that can be incorporated by electronic commerce include information access, and the delivery and payment of insurance policies.

Regulators warming to online world

Article Abstract:

Several issues concerning the use of online systems in the insurance industry were discussed at the 'State Regulation 2000' symposium. The systems are capable of providing reliable, flexible and private insurance information via the Internet computer network. It was estimated that more than 30% of the public would buy insurance products through online systems. Insurance regulators were urged to consider various financial services reform legislation in 1998.

Delivery systems playing new role in underwriting

Information delivery systems are becoming important to underwriting. Risk assessment and underwriting has become more scientific as objective, factual data has become more accessible. Underwriting tools include the motor vehicle report and the credit report. Centralizing information makes underwriting easier.
