Counter-insurgency redux

Article Abstract:

Insurgncies of the 21st century differ significantly form those of the 1960s, as the modern insurgents do no seek to overthrow the state, may not have coherent strategy or may pursue a faith-based approach difficult to counter with traditional methods. The world have experienced a paradigm shift in the discipline of counter-insurgency due to the continuous evolution of insurgency tactics, and classical theory is necessary but not sufficient for success against contemporary insurgencies, and its percepts must be applied with judicious skepticism and willingness to admit error.

State-building in southern Iraq

Article Abstract:

Office of Reconstruction and Humanitarian Assistance's (ORHA) main initial role was expected to be the management of large numbers of refugees and displaced persons, and the provision of basic life support. But prior planning and preparation, the Coalition's civilian organizational structures, available staff and levels of expertise all proved inadequate for ORHA to accomplish its task.

Strategy and the limitation of war

Article Abstract:

Strategic theory has failed to provide the tools, which would examine the conflicts now being waged since the most important task for strategy is to understand the nature of war it is addressing. Strategy is grounded in military history and a major war is necessary for the development of strategy without which it only becomes a discussion without a common theme or coherence.
