The UN's role in nation-building: From the Belgian Congo to Iraq

Article Abstract:

Skeptics who had scoffed at the UN's efforts in re-building strife-torn nations acknowledge that the UN's efforts were most cost effective and increasingly swift especially when the US action failed in countries like Afghanistan and Iraq. The UN's reputation no doubt took a hammering when they faced difficulties in Somalia and Yugoslavia but with it's experience gained over the years, the UN is definitely better placed to rebuild nations rather than countries like the US, which uses brute force to quell rebellion.

Does the UN have intelligence?

Article Abstract:

The supposedly reliable United States (US) intelligence reports, based on which the US invaded Iraq, turned out to be unreliable. It is suggested that the US should have shared intelligence with and through the United Nations before the Iraq War in evaluating and responding to the perceived situation, and should definitely do so in future to approach situations with a proper perspective.
