The environment-Energy security nexus: Critical analysis of an energy 'love triangle' in Southeast Asia

Article Abstract:

A study investigating how the cross-border energy 'love triangle' between Thailand, Burma and Laos is increasing the existing social tensions and conflict, hastening environmental degradation and intensifying various manifestations of insecurity is illustrated. While these projects have little benefit into the development process, the benefits are reaped in elite circles of the urban centers where their interests are largely antagonistic to the general populations.

From agricultural modernisation to agri-food globalisation: the waning of national development in Thailand

Article Abstract:

This article examines the role agriculture has played in the process of modernization, national development, and globalization in Thailand. The author argues the state's agricultural policy, which has changed from state control in an effort to industrialize Thailand to agribusiness privatization in an effort to compete in a globalized economy, has left the environment degraded, created massive inequality, and intensified agricultural production.

The end of disciplinary modernisation? The Asian economic crisis and the ongoing reinvention of Singapore

Article Abstract:

This article discusses Singapore's economic policy which has emphasized rapid economic development based upon disciplinary modernization. The author evaluates Singapore's economic model in the midst of the Asian economic crisis, maintaining the government is asking for more creativity and intelligent productivity, and argues the policies of disciplinary modernization and creativity are contradictory and lack future vision.
