The growing relevance of Special Operations Forces in U.S. military strategy

Article Abstract:

The history of the Special Operations Forces (SOF) is described, which was earlier a marginalized force but has transformed to become a vital part of the U.S. military strategy. For the first time in the U.S. military history, both conventional military and civilian leadership recognize the value of SOF, the reason being change in the security environment following irregular threats, the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT) and the conduct of SOF in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Strategic studies is that discipline that lies between humanities and social science, which though being very broad based is influenced by cultural, technological, ethical and other factors. It is the study of statecraft as it relates to military power but it is very difficult to delineate the intellectual borders of strategic studies.

A coherent theory of coercion? The writings of Robert Pape

Article Abstract:

Robert Pape's arguments on an effective theory of coercion are discussed. His argument that coercive strategy of denial to the enemies' military power is more effective than punishment strategy to the civilians, is also examined.
