Writing the nation's destiny: Indian fiction in English before 1910

Article Abstract:

The representation of proto-national identity in Indian-English fiction before the formative nationalist novels of the 1920s and 1930s is examined. The theoretical connections between Indian-English fiction and the secularism of the Nehruvian national project is questioned by arguing that primordialist nationalism and culturally transacted concepts of communal and racial identity were key elements in the political imagining of early Indian fiction in English.

Cultural connections: Lagaan and its audience responses

Article Abstract:

An attempt made to examine how directors bring out the tested Bollywood formula in order to generate a broader appeal not only within India but increasingly across the world is presented by focusing on the Bollywood hit film 'Lagaan'. The film raises concerns about the nature of a globalized world as it has been regarded as a euphemism for Western cultural domination.
