A 'hired gun' for new management

Article Abstract:

Carlton S Chen, the vice pres and general counsel of firearms maker Colt's Manufacturing Co, Inc, supervises patent and trademark administration and does most of the company's contract work as the sole in-house lawyer. The legal budget was $2.2 mil in 1996 but down about 30% the next year. Colt attempted a takeover of Belgian gunmaker F.N. Herstal SA in July 1997 when it was in financial trouble. but the Belgian government rejected the plan.

Quality is the key, not cost control

Article Abstract:

Edward V. Lahey, Jr., the senior vice pres, general counsel and secretary of Pepsico, supervises a department of 80 in-house lawyers and has an outside legal budget of $25 mil. The in-house lawyers practice mainly securities and trademark law, financings and acquisitions. Litigation is done mainly by outside counsel. Lahey states his department has long been cost-conscious and considers his in-house purpose to be preventive.
