A palette of color-blind rulings; following conservative precedent, race-based voting restrictions struck down

Article Abstract:

Issues regarding the Supreme Court's striking down of race-based voting restrictions in Rice v. Cayetano are discussed. This ruling regarded Hawaii's practice of permitting only native Hawaiians to administer a $300 mil state fund set up for their benefit.

When and whether the white-dominated North Carolina legislature can create an electoral district that favors the black minority is discussed, an issue which has come before the US Supreme Court twiice in the past decade. The issue in the pending case is whether race or partisan politics explain the borders of the 12th District.

Alexander v. Sandoval, a pending Supreme Court case claiming that an English-only drivers license exam policy violated the plaintiff's civil rights due to discrimination on the basis of national origin, is discussed.
