Acting more generously than the law requires: the issue of employee layoffs in halakhah

Article Abstract:

The issue of plant closings was analyzed from the point of view of the oral and written law of Judaism or halakhah. The two levels of Jewish law were also taken into account. These are the legal and moral levels which correspond to man-made laws and God's law, respectively. The integration of Jewish law into all aspects of human life should serve as the guide for ethical business decisions. Hence, the concept of tzedakah, loosely translated as righteousness, enables employers to come up with informed decisions that take into consideration ethical implications.

Guidelines for employee participation committees

Article Abstract:

Guidelines for the creation and operation of employee participation committees are discussed. Employers must ensure that employees are involved in the creation of the committee. A substantial amount of autonomy should also be granted to the committee. Employers should likewise avoid any activity which could be construed as illegal antiunion motivation for the committee's creation or administration.
