Airline antitrust pact hits a snag; protest over legal fees

Article Abstract:

In re: Domestic Air Transportation Antitrust Litigation was close to a hearing on the fairness of a $408 million settlement when 24 state attorneys general and some consumers criticized the settlement as inadequate and a windfall for lawyers. The class action involves 10 million travelers and alleges that between Jan 1, 1988 and June 30, 1992 they were victimized by a price fixing scheme at 23 domestic airport hubs. Opponents of the settlement charge that setting aside $24 million out of a $50 million settlement fund for attorneys' fees is excessive.

Ailing implant pact nears collapse: deal is in 'intensive care' as $7 billion offer is rejected

Article Abstract:

Efforts to repair an underfunded breast implant settlement failed recently, allegedly because plaintiffs' negotiators divided 5-1 in favor of a $7 billion package. Federal judge Sam Pointer wanted unanimity and has set a new deadline of Oct 1, after which he will let more women opt out of the class action in favor of individual suits. Another source claims the talks failed when codefendants disagreed on the size of each one's contribution. Meanwhile, the Norplant class action is stuck in procedural wrangling.

Ad notice for class approved

Article Abstract:

A class action suit alleging price fixing by domestic airlines, which could involve as many as 50 million class members, can be conducted by notifying potential plaintiffs through advertising in major publications instead of through the mail according to a US District Judge in Atlanta, GA. Attempts to use credit card records to compile addresses for class members were unsuccessful and overly expensive. The class includes anyone taking a domestic flight between Jan 1, 1988 and Aug 7, 1991.
