Asian-Americans find place in the profession; Pacific Rim and tech booms create major firms' biggest minority

Article Abstract:

The increase in Asian Americans in the legal profession is due to a rise in Asian immigration generally as well as increased Pacific Rim and high technology business. Both kinds of business value a knowledge of Asian culture and science expertise. The very great interest in Pacific Rim business has given Asian American lawyers, with their knowledge of Asian business culture and of American law, a particular advantage. The Asian American entrepreneurial community of California is drawn to members of their own ethnic group to meet their legal needs.

Recruiting tools cut guesswork; firms supplement the interview process with methods designed to find the right mix of skills

Article Abstract:

Uncertainty in the law-firm hiring process typically results from ill- thought-out methods that focus on academic skills and behaviors and that ignore law students' strongest career interests. Hiring firms should determine what characteristics correlate with success in the firm, develop performance profiles, check references and writing samples, and interview with behavior in mind. Without these techniques firms and students are often reduced to guesswork in identifying their best prospects.

Mentors do still exist: know how to find yourself one; a good relationship with a mentor is a two-way street

Article Abstract:

Making partner in a law firm has become more difficult, but finding a mentor is still possible. Young lawyers should first figure out what career success means to them and what kind of lawyer fits with their self-image. A good mentor is someone who fits all or part of that picture, and at different stages in a career various lawyers may be mentors. Maintaining a long-term focus and watching for opportunities, doing a great job, being available, and acting genuine are also important.
