Business mediation: all in the family

Article Abstract:

Mediation solved the resentments within three families that co-operated a hotel and hospitality business. The three patriarchs reached retirement age and the children disagreed with each other over how the business should be run. Mediation divided the business into three separate groups. Each family then established its own new business. The mediation was particularly successful in resolving the claims of two parties interested in the same business group.

Ritual and resolution: the role of reconciliation in the mediation process: lessons from a traditional Chinese village

Article Abstract:

A mediation process based on ancient Chinese customs can aid dispute resolutions in the modern age. The Chinese believed in the sanctity of the mediator, the importance of face-to-face meetings, the telling and retelling of the story, deep understanding of the conflict and a resolution that goes beyond an intellectual judgment and heals the underlying injuries. A genuine transformation in the people and the situation should take place.
