Clinton's effect on labor & employment law

Article Abstract:

Labor and employment policies should grow more liberal during the Clinton administration. President Clinton has chosen Robert Reich, a liberal advisor, as Secretary of Labor. Clinton signed the Family and Medical Leave Act into law shortly after he took office. This measure had been vetoed twice by George Bush. The Workplace Fairness Bill, which outlaws permanent replacements of strikers, has been reintroduced in the Senate, and Clinton has indicated that he would sign it. Clinton should also revitalize the Occupational Safety and Health Act and try to pass health care reform.

Regional labor-market data: why bother? How to bother?

Article Abstract:

Regional labor-market data is essential because of local and state economic performance variations despite the trend toward macroeconomic policy. However, the quality of regional data has been questioned, especially for a large state such as California. The adoption of a new industry classification system may also complicate information gathering. The government can work on quality versus cost in two ways: frequency can be dropped to quarterly over monthly, allowing for improved accuracy, and partnerships with private data-gathering organizations can lower costs.
